Hello all
hope you are all having a good day,
i have a small problem that i hope someone can help me with, back in march i changed the thermostat on my 99 300td as the old one was jammed in the open position, while i was changing it i spilled some of the coolant on the driveway but im not sure how much i lost, so i added about half a pint of water to the coolant to be on the safe side, yesterday i opened the coolant filler cap to check the level and it appears to be low, the coolant level was just about visible at the bottom of the expansion tank, there is no leaks of any kind that i can see, my problem is im not sure how much more coolant to put in as i can't see any level markings to guide me, can someone please advise me as to how high i fill the expansion tank as im afraid i might put in too much and do some damage.
thanks very much in advance for your replys `(luskred).
SOKOLOFF, thanks very much for your reply, for a while there i thought i was being ignored, turns out i have no owners manual, i understood what you were saying about the clear and black tank and i topped of the coolant level as soon as i got your repley, turns out i had to add about another half point of coolant, thanks again for your reply, LUSKRED.
actually the car will tell you when the coolant level is low, a message will appear "coolant level low". as i remember my dad's 1982 240d and 1990 190D did tell when the coolant level was low, so i would think yours (1999) will do the same thing.
In older MB the low coolant level wold get a light warning, in newer it display the message on the cluster.
MB usually require coolant level close to the rim with the engine hot. The tank rim is below highest point, leaving space for expansion even if you top it off.
In another words MB is making lot of things idiot-proof.
