replacement key am I stuck with the local dealer and their story
I saw posts recommending OEMparts as a potential sourse for a cheaper replacement key, but their web site appears to be extinct. Am I stuck with the dealer? Hoen Mercedes parts dept is telling me that there is a 90% chance the new key will work but if it doesn't I can not return the $200 key and I'll then need to upgrade the ignition system.
Is this true?
your terminology... a "replacement" key makes all other existing keys for the car invalid/inoperable. An "additional" key [I believe up to 8 keys] keeps the original coding intact.
The dealer ordered one [additional key] for my '97 E420 and it worked fine, and I was given no such warning at all...
Unless your car has been assigned 8 keys already it will work. If it has been assigned 8 keys you will have to replace the system.
True that you cannot return the key as it is programmed and considered useless on any other vehicle but yours.
