Bosch specs/testing: AFM, AMM, MAS, MAF

Hi, Folks.

Came across this on the net and thought it might be of general interest, but particularly to the more tech-minded folks here. I also saw some posts regarding simply blowing on it to watch the voltage fluctuations, see if they are in range, etc. (Of course, you'll need to clean it after blowing on it....)

At any rate it provides information that is useful to help diagnose the MAF itself, so that's an option if you're getting codes and want to dig in a bit before buying a new MAF.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Wrong type

of maf though,so you might want to check values before using them to verify a w210 maf.
The one tested is the modern thin film maf,not our old school thin wire maf.
that gets dorty and falls out of range and needs to be bathed at times or shet canned at others.

To the best of my recollection, what I saw down the throat of the insert, buried within it's plastic chambers, was film, not a wire. If you have a spare you want to break open and snap pics of I'm sure folks here would be appreciative. If it turns out this is inapplicable to the W210 then it should be deleted from the forum and the stickies.

I junked

my last spare, lest some nefarious pilferer got hold of it cleaned it up and sold it to someone looking for a deal on ebay
Platinum wire mafs are subject to failure and dirt and thin film I am pretty sure don't fail from dirt contamination.Best thing is if someone has a real yime scanner look for the 5 volts and a good circuit and they will know it is good and if they get the p0100 toss it or make sure it is plugged in and the wires are good and if they get the 0170 and 0173 giveit the good old greg diy cleaning and see if it works and if not by now they should be wise enough to know where to get a real one for a fair price.

why they did not install a karmen vortex optical maf ,God only knows

...Yet another reason to think these are thin-film, since cleaning -- if ever -- is a very temporary "fix" once those codes appear. I also remember reading somewhere that the thin film (as opposed to hot wire) while more "accurate" over a range of reading actually wear out as the film degrades over time, which would also tend to support the poor history we see with these things.

That also makes it -- to me at least -- all the more important to be sure you buy a quality part, not a cheap Chinese knockoff.
