The variation of doctor v/s mechanic joke was "Can you replace piston rings thru the tailpipe?"

I've not heard that variation, I'd guess it's probably newer. I think I heard the version I posted about 25 or more years ago. But I do like yours as well.

Real problem is, the more you know about these cars the more difficult it is to give a (simple) answer. As someone pointed out on this thread, communication is vital and hard enough in real situations let alone the virtual world in which we find ourselves.
Eric, thanks for the kind words. It is tough to do on a forum, which is why I always try to pull more information from people. I get a bit frustrated when I post something asking for more information (and explaining why it's useful to have that information) and then others come in and just start shotgunning the thing. Common example, usually from a unsuspecting newbie not used to the complexity that is MB: "Hi, my check engine light came on. What should I do?" and I basically reply "get the codes read." Go back later and there's answers such as "yeah I had the light, replace the MAF" or "that's probably the O2 sensor". Answering when you only have 1/3 or 1/2 of the story isn't terribly helpful. (I used to be a wrench so I understand very well about the necessity of getting all the information you can before you start jumping in, same basic idea in my current IT gig.)

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Naw, even worse - the poster who has a problem, with everybody chipping in and trying to help, and then ... nothing from the poster whether the problem has been solved. But the most frustrating: after going backwards and forwards, the poster saying "Nothing has helped and I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow, and then ......Nothing further from him. We can all learn from every experience, even or especially if he comes back and tell us we are all a bunch of idiots, since the problem was with the ^%#$$%.

I just hate being left in suspense, especially if if you have followed a thread and you never hear the final diagnoses. Sometimes the same problems pop up again later and everybody goes again through the same guessing game.

Actually, I was agreeing with you, just laughing along at your 'couched' identification of the real culprit.
