I just bought a 97 E-320. The previous owner had told me he had transmission problems, after driving the car thru a slight flood. He had the transmission replaced with a use one from what he told me. I got the car intention to rebuild the transmission or swap it out, but I think this one is still salvagable.
If you start it up cold it goes right into gear and moves, but its seems once the car warms up it doesn't want to shift anymore. If you drive it down the road and stop after 10 minutes or so, it won't shift out of first. If you put it in park, it won't go back into drive. If you wait abit you maybe able to put it in Rev but not always. After she cools down after a hour of so it will go into gear and the cycle starts again. Anyone have any ideas ? I don't know much about the transmissions in these, but I hear they're a sealed unit. I guess its not just low on fluid. Filter maybe ?
you did not pay more then a buck80 for it
Going through a flood is not going to take out the transmission. Now getting water in the tcm will cause all of the symptoms you stated.Go to the diy section look up trans module.it is probably to late to dry it out so get one from a junker and r/r it.Do you have a check engine light on?
A diagnostic trip to a good indie shop with a star diagnostics machine will confirm where the malfunction is,if you are not confident about tossing in parts.

his explanation sounds like one of those car fax commercials
Slight flood
Wheres the TCM located... And no I didn't pay too much for it. He said the water wasn't too high... There no water marks or damage to the interior or any on the outside either. Theres a slight whining noise when you put it in gear... Thats what makes me think its the tranny.
the shifter, remove the wood around the shifter and that big black box with all the electronics and mechanical gizmos there she be.Diy removal in the diy someplace.

Since I got the car this is what I've done. I completely drained the transmission and torque converter. Replaced the filter, fluid, and flushed the lines to the cooler. It goes into gear fine, drive and reverse, but doesn't shift. But after reading the site a bit and the owners manual, I believe its stuck in Limp Home Mode. I've disconnected the battery numerous times, but I don't think that does anything at all in my case, because for some reason the presets seem to stay in the radio and seat memory. I'm gonna try that key on, step on gas for 5 sec deal as mentioned above. Anyone else have any other recommendations. I'm also trying to get some good diagnostic hardware and software for a laptop. I have autotap, but I don't have the cable to connect to a Benz.

Disconnecting the battery does not clear gearbox settings or limp mode. Carsoft 7.4 may enable you to do it, if you get the correct version (Multiplexer version).

I finally got a chance to hook up my dads scanner and get the codes. The only one that was in there was P0730 - Incorrect Gear Ratio Comparsion Negative. Cleared it. Went around the block. Still in Limp Home Mode but the code didn't come back. I got my cable for Carsoft today too. How do you shut Limp Home Mode off with it ?
