Hi, Im that kid that had the 98 E430 and was asking about puttin 20s on it, and all of you were like "omg oh noez" lol.
Well, since then, I bought a newer refreshed model, and put the 20s on, and Im glad I did, I think it turned out pretty well.
What do you guys think?
Everyone told me I would have to get my fenders rolled and that Id need to put spacers, but they fit just perfectly. And the ride quality has not suffered very much at all.
I want to do more, but Id like your opinions, and I have a question concerning compatability with the steering controls and a new head unit.
Things I wanna do
-------------------
-Tint the windows
-Put a new exhaust on it (And possibly cut the rear bumper to accomodate the twin pipes on the left side)
-Smoked side markers
-Smoke the clear part only of the rear light
-Possibly powdercoat the emblems black (Im undecided on this)
-Possibly install the star grille (Undecided on this as well cause I love seein that benz logo from inside the car lol)
And of course, I wanna put a new head unit in the dash, however I dont want to lose compatability with the steering controls.
If I install a new unit, will I lose that?
And also, Ive heard of people putting the ML nav unit in the W210, is that possible? Do you retain steering controls?
What other possible options do you guys suggest regarding the dash unit?
And finally, Id like to hear any other suggestions.

putting 20" rims has little to do with the need to roll fenders. it has
more to do with the tire size you've fitted to the rims

i'm lost here. you have a 98 model. it doesn't have steering wheel
control to the head unit.
each his own.It looks silly, are you going to drop it?or is it going to always look like bicycle tires on a mercedes?
Have you installed the camber bolts or the rear links?Have you had it aligned?
ride has not suffered much? You can't fool those in the know and that thing has gotta ride like a small tank and handle worse.
young ,doesn't care about ride quality and works for a used car lot, someone came in with a later model(refreshed)with getto wheels on it and he bumped up to it.
ohlord
I think that's what he means
T-Town, the fact that you state you're a kid explains to the greatest extent why you like the look and why you don't notice the ride. 18s are a significant increase in ride harshness over stock 16s, even moreso on 20s, so while you may not notice it, in truth that's more perception than reality. (Same way a person will see the one they love differently than the rest of the populace.) Of course if you only drive on smooth roads there is not much to notice, but get onto rough ones, railroad tracks, freeway expansion joints, lane divider pucks, etc. and it's quite apparent.
Since I bought my car to enjoy on all manner of roads and conditions and I actually like less harshness, 17 is my limit (although I think 18s are the best compromise on looks, again that is wholly personal); plus I am not a fan of the rubber-band tire look on most vehicles (I did see an x-box with 18s, since that's such a quirky vehicle anyway it looked okay).
Certainly not my preference but as I always say, the great thing about owning a car is that you get to decide how to mod and maintain it.
On the radio, you're probably better off sticking a post in the audio/tele forum. First, the interface between the head unit and cluster spans several years and model lines, not just the newer 210, and Second, that tech forum is loaded with tech guys that live and breathe such stuff. If there are aftermarket units (or plug-in interface units) that allow you to retain the steering wheel controls they'll know.
