So I went out to run an errand. Hit the remote, door unlocks as usual.
Open the door, the cluster lights up (as usual).
However, the radio also comes on.
I stopped and stood there with the deer-in-the-headlights look, glancing at the key in my hand and the dash. "Yes," my brain registers, "the radio is on and the key is in your hand."
I'm used to the radio playing when I turn the car off, at least until I remove the key from the ignition. "But this," I say to myself, "is new."
Unfortunately I had the radio off at my destination, so when I got back in the car, I hit the radio button -- key in my hand -- and the radio came on. (No, it wasn't playing Ghost in the Machine.)
One more errand, left the radio on. Unlocked the car, cluster lit up, but no radio.
I'm going to guess it's a transient, if it recurs I'll do the reboot.
Just curious if any of my peeps have experienced anything like it.
Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Greg, I just went out to my garage and opened up my 97 E420 sat in the drivers seat and hit the radio button, key in pocket. The radio comes on. Its like the "rest" mode on the cabin ventilation fan. I can hit the rest button, with key in pocket, and the fan will come on. I guess thats so you can get air movement while you listen to the radio, key in pocket.
Hi, Jeff. Thanks for testing yours. I have also tried mine again and it functions as you describe. So now I am just curious as to why it came on the one time as a result of my simply opening the door.
Maybe 'tis but a precursor of something completely unrelated. For sure I an not rolling down my rear windows!

I just tried mine too. I could turn the radio on and get the rest mode to engage without having the key in the ignition. Like you Greg, if I have the radio playing it stays on down to the removal position but it stops (with a momentary delay) after removing the key.

I tried, but he didn't have the proper pdf decoder.
Sadly or not, it wasn't drugs. That's why it took a minute to register. (Actually, since then I've been considering Matt L's comment on the K40 relay...)
