I have a line on some really nice rims and tires from a late model E350, W211. These would be for my 1998 E430. Now, I've done my research and I know that the W211 rims have lug bolts with a 14mm ball seat and a 14mm diameter threaded shaft. The W211 rims therefore have bolt holes in them of corresponding diameter (slightly larger than 14mm). I also know that the W210 rims have 12mm ball seat lug bolts of 12mm threaded diameter.
So, I can buy the custom lug bolts from RAD, Germany, that have the 14mm ball seat and the 12mm threaded shaft and the rims will bolt up.
Question is, will that small bit of extra clearance inside the bolt corridor of the rim (where the lug bolt goes through the rim), matter? Since the rims sits on the hub squarely, and the 14mm ball seat will ensure the rim is securely pegged to the hub, I don't see how a tiny bit of extra clearance is going to make a difference (as long as the lug bolts are checked frequenty to ensure they are tight)? Once the bolts are tight, I don't see how any force could be applied transversely to the lug bolts from either the rim of the hub that could make this clearance an issue? When installing rims, it always seems like those bolt holes are generous anyway - i.e. the bolt does not have to snug up securely inside the rim.
Anyone with any experience using these rims? Thoughts?
TIA!
These are the rims (stock photo, no idea who the couple are! )

hello, greetings from south carolina; i work at a dealership and i have never been able to fit a set off 211 16 or 17 inch wheels on a 210. the last time we tried a set, a few months back, the wheels didnt fit on the hub correctly on the front. i dont remember exactly what the problem was, but know now that 211 wheels wont fit on a 210. if im wrong someone please tell me, but i dont think i am, and that is the reason we have ne ver put 211 wheels on a 210. 210 wheels will fit on a 124, with slight rubbing at the rear wheel well, with bigger than a 225/60/16. i dont want to mislead you, but im pretty sure im right. im at roadsidedude@hotmail.com if you have any other questions. good luck with your venture, i think the 17 inch wheels look good on your 211, take care.
I don't know what roadsidedude's issue was, but I have those EXACT wheels on my W210 with the rad bolts, R14x12Mx26mm. The fit is perfect, no issues whatsoever. Previously I had a set of the 16" 2004 W211 wheels on the same car, also with no fitment issues. As far as the "extra space" you mention that isn't an issue since the wheel centers on the hub and the lug bolts center in the lug hole in the wheel. I suppose it might be an issue if your lug bolts came loose (extra play allowing them to beat the wheel up more) but if your lug bolts are coming loose you have bigger problems in the first place.
I have to say that I've never heard of a fitment problem (other than the lug bolt issue) with any W211 wheel on a W210 until reading roadsidedude's post.
So BB, I say if those are the wheels you like, proceed accordingly and you will love the look. However, you will need to drop back one tire size; the 245/45-17 tires on the 211 17" wheels are too big for the W210 and will rub in the front as you pass about 60-70% of the turning limits. 235/45-17 is the same OD as your stock W210 tire and is the ideal fit.
Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Thanks for both the replies guys, much appreciated.
greg - you wouldn't have a pic of your car with the wheels on, would you? I'd love to see how they look. Thanks for the detailed info, that is what I was looking for.
I also appreciate your reply - I have a W210 wagon and am looking to upgrade my wheels from 16 in. to one of the 17-in. W211 styles. There are several good sets available, here, on Craigs List and eBay, but the mind-numbing combination and potential conflicts/doubts presented by increased wheel and tire size, width, lug bolts, offset, etc. has been, well, off-putting to say the least. I see W211 wheels on other '01 E320 wagons and say, damn it, it is possible! Your message helped confirm that. I have a set that I'm working to buy locally and with this info I hope to complete the sale.
My current 16-inch OEM monoblocks will play a new and equally important role when they are transformed into winter wheels with new rubber next time the snow falls here in Mass., hopefully the 2008-09 season.

Here's another W210 wagon with W211 wheels (thanks to Benz50602, aka Mike for the pic). These are the wheels I'm trying to buy now. I think they look great, sedan or wagon.
