W210 E420 Front Brake Squeal

I have squealing from the front brakes on my W210 '96 E420 estate. The car doesn't have ESP just ASR and sometimes when he squealing is bad the ASR defect light comes on, on the dash display. I have removed, inspected (plenty of pad material left), cleaned and then greased the brake pads up.....still squeals. Looking at http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp...SGR=030&SGN=01 it appears that they are supposed to have a shim (diagram picture 061) which mine do not seem to have. Where are these shims supposed to go and how many do I need....the diagram doesn't really explain very well. Also if it isn't this causing the squal....what could it be?

Someone

installed the pads without the thin shim, that is the area that you put a band of crc brand anti squeal paste on and wait till tacky and install the shim piece and pop the pads back in.Get some from a bone yard or the dealer or get a quote from autohausaz.com.There in lies your squeal

Although on some the shim is stuck to the back of the pad. (Akebono)

So I grease the back of the pads again......then attach the anti squeal shim to the greased back....then grease the shim where it will be pushed by the caliper piston. I take it I will need 2 each side so 4 in total. Would this cause a error message from the ASR?

When I say grease I mean copperease/slip type grease! So no copperslip required between shim and caliper pistons then?

Correct

apply in two strips between the shim and the pad and none between the shim and the piston.

Okay

once you have applied the shim and inspect the brakes again,I was looking in your post and you said the asr light comes on at times.Have you cleaned the rotors and calipers with a strong spray of water followed by a spray of brake cleaner?sometimes this will clear accumulate brake dust that fouls the asr and abs system and can make the light go on and also create noise.lastly are your rotors in good shape?
Hope this helps,If you were close by I'd come take a look

Whereabouts does this brake dust accumulate? I take it, it could be cleaned off without the need to remove anything.
