Post DIY Water Pump & WIS

Hi guys!

Well here it is! The Latest in my DIY exploits. Please proceed with caution. This is how I did it and I assume no responsibility for how you do it. I attached a DIY explanation and the WIS as well. For M112 Engine and M113 Engine.

Enjoy!

Drew

TNT,

Very nice contribution!!

May I ask, "What prompted you to change the pump out??" Were you having some problems?

Very good question

I was doing a weekly "look around" under the hood with the engine running. I noticed that the serpentine belt was wobbling. That is NOT a good thing. I trouble shot it with some help from the folks here. Just search for some posts about water pump. My threads will come up.

At any rate I am glad I did because you can see the scoring that happened with the loose bearing. The shaft was wobbling and would skim the pump wheel on the engine block.

You should indicate that your procedures are for M112/M113 engine (E320/E430).

Other engines installed in USA W210 include M104 (inline 6) and M119 (early V8=E420)

Your procedures should be applicable to most M112/M113 installations, not just W210 installations.

Here are links to information about the two Mercedes special tools required--no one but you is ever going to find these on eBay:

http://www.startekinfo.de/etools/con...3 589 00 01 00
http://www.startekinfo.de/etools/con...3 589 00 40 00

There is no such thing as "star nut sockets." What's required is external Torx sockets, and assuming your sizes are correct, the true size names are E10, E12, and E14. A nice set of these is available here: Sockets Sets 1/4" & 3/8" Drive Bit Sets From Wiha

Just some "editing" by a retired technical writer!

Thank you

Kent appreciate the editing. Just as an FYI the "Star Nut Socket" was an error. The label on the package says "7pc. Star Socket Set." In the specific step by step you will see that they are labeled as "E10" and such. As for "no such thing as 'star nut sockets.'" if you do a search for "Star Sockets on e-bay you get a whole lot of returns. Boy I am glad that we have folks on the boards here that are willing to provide feedback!

As for labeling the DIY for the various engines thanks for the info. I did not know which engines it would work for but now I and everyone else does.

And by the way never underestimate the benefit of a weekly look around while the engine is running.

TNTRower,

Did you torque each bolt? or did you just hand tighten them?

Thanks.

(I'm going to replace the water pump for a 1999 E320.)

Any chance of sourcing wrenches like this at a local shop?
Duh, I started the job, (big mistake) and THEN found your DIY.

I originally searched on ML320 and water pump and got nothin' till I got smart and searched on m112 and water pump.
Unfortunately I've already got it torn apart.

I see them on ebay, but looks like it'll be a week before I can get them.
Hopefully the local PD won't tow me before that.

Hell yeh! Thank god for google.
I found this thread, when I searched on water pump and M112 !
Thanks to all, major Kudo's for the pdf's, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!
I was lucky, my local indy MB guy loaned me his special wrenches...
I did find them on ebay...but I'd be waiting for a week!

So, my GF's ML320 is back on the road...as best as it can be at 187.5K miles!!!!
Wow, it was a beeotch of a job. I was trying imagine if I was a pro mechanic, and then they say, OK great, here's the next work order.
F that! Man, I hit the hot tub and 2 beers later I think I'll survive.
I replaced my Supercharger and alternator and there were less bolts to
R&R than on this job!

Thanks to Rick at Rick's Mercedes in Scotts Valley for the much needed loan of the wrenches and the correct parts!!!

Many many thanks!
