Trans Leak

I just bought a 99 E320. I took it in for an oil change (not at MB) and they notified me of a leak from the tranny. It is comming from the passenger side front. (looking from below the car) Right by the electrical wiring. The fluid level is not low, it drives fine. I am just wondering how serious this is, and if anyone knows approx. how much this might end up costing me if I take it in?? Thanks.

Hey, bloxx, welcome to the forum and the world of 210 ownership. That is a known issue, the connector that goes into the transmission must be replaced and the harness opened enough to clean out the fluid.

Take it to a good indie and have the fluid and filter done at the same time, my guess is they will give you a little break on the cumulative labor.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

So is this something that I should get fixed RIGHT away? It is not a bad leak. Thanks!

It's not going to get better.

And, chances are the transmission fluid has NEVER been changed, as that was the recommendation at the time the car was produced. That's been rethought, and change is now recommended.

DO NOT let anyone work on it, however, who mentions the word "FLUSH." That's what happens to your wallet and isn't something any Mercedes needs.

Greg,

I may have the same issue with mine. I see you say the harness needs to be replaced. What exactly is causing the leak? I have been trying to find the reason mine has a slow leak near that connection too. I have all the bolts torqued correctly and it still has a small drip.

Is it the seal on the connection that goes bad and then you have to clean out the wiring harness? Is there actual fluid inside the wiring harness too? How much does a new connector usually run? Anyone got a DIY write up? I am very anal and hate that every morning I have a little drip spot on my garage floor

Thx

Its also a Good Idea to remove the Trans Control unit and take the cover off it to see if Trans fluid was leaking into the TCU..If so use CONTACT cleaner to clean the TCU ..and reinstall

Btw the Plastic connector AND the oring have been changed SEVERAL Times ..Make sure that you have the latest production date stamped on the box ...

So when I take the TCU off am I going to lose all my fluid? I just want to be ready for that since it is my DD and can't have it disabled too long. The fluid appears to be in great shape and coincides with the previous owner telling me he recently had it serviced. I know new ATF costs a grip so I would like to avoid fluid loss if possible but on the flip side of the coin I want the job done right.

It appears from what you are saying that it is a failed O-ring on the TCU connector causing this slow leak?

Thanks

CBF, none of this applies to your car.

Hmm ok, I guess I thought it did since my leak is right around a wiring harness that sounded exact to what bloxxMerc was asking about.

So with the 4spd this would not apply even though it appears to be leaking around a wiring harness?

The 722.6 leaks at a harness that is not used for your (hydro-mechanical) 722.4 transmission. So no, this doesn't apply at all. You have no TCU.
