E320

I have a '98 E320 with 100K. I love the car, but one little problem is very irritating. The steering column housing (between the wheel and the dash) moves whenever you use the turn signal in mild or warm weather, but not when it is cold. Is there a simple way to correct this? Like I said, it's not a big deal, but it is very irritating! Appreciate any ideas.

You probably have a loose screw in there, or something is broken. To determine the problem, you will have to remove the steering wheel.

Here's a friendly hint, choose a better topic next time. "E320" should go in your profile (and add the year).

Steering wheel on the move

Thanks, Matt L, for replying; I was hoping the problem would be simpler to fix, but . . .

There was a recent thread on this issue awhile back on site below.

Essentially, the stalks for wipers, turn signals, cruise control, etc. are attached to the column with a band which is tightened with a screw. After removing the air bag, steering wheel and plastic sleeves, you can access the screw and tighten it.

Thanks, Richard for answering with the great set of pictures showing how to fix this "problem." However, after seeing the work involved (I'm sort of an amateur, you know, the kind who take their car to the shop after they've screwed it up. I think I'm going to let the thing turn for a spell and see if it gets worse. Thanks again. I do appreciate it.

Right Tools

Make it very easy. It took me a total of 1 hour with a beer break. I did it by myself and wedged a 2x4 between the steering wheel and floor so the wheel would not turn when I broke the retainer nut free. If you are willing to drop $500 on the repair then by all means take it in. IMHO letting it sit is not a good idea with all those wires in there. Follow the repair wiki and don't "punt" when it comes to the tools. After you do it you will be amazed at how your confidence level increases with repairs.
