i have a bose system and once in a while, while music is playing, the voilume either lowers by itself or goes louder by itself..anyone else have the prpblem before?
The stereo in my '99 E430 does this too. I don't understand how GM could get speed sensitive volume controls perfect and Mercedes could screw it up so badly (I have to assume mine is malfunctioning). My stereo volume seems to jump when I reach a certain speed, and when I turn it down, the next step down with the knob is quieter than I want it. It's like the vehicle speed is used as a multiplier with the volume control. It doesn't deafen me when the volume goes up, but it is annoying.
I had a '95 Chevy Caprice with a speed sensitive volume control and it worked perfectly - GM was smart enough to include a separate control on the front of the radio so you could adjust how much the volume changed depending on speed.
I would like to disable the speed sensitive volume control. Can I just disconnect circuit Z90 (left rear VSS signal) from the radio? According to WIS, that would be the green/black wire at pin 1 in radio connector "A". Or, is there a way to tell the radio to not do the speed sensitive volume?

I had a similar problem in my 1998 E430. I traded the head unit into the dealer for a re-manufactured one and it worked perfectly. My best guess is that the volume control was faulty but an indy car audio place suggested I do what I did. I still think if I could have found someone willing to clean/replace the volume control that would have fixed it. This was pretty expensive, so I hope you find a less costly solution.

Musikmann - I think if I bought a replacement for the nasty looking volume knob on my stereo I would be pretty well satisfied with it, if the volume would stay where I set it. I wonder if these radios become overly sensitive to the vehicle speed input as they get into their old age.
JCFair - Thanks for that link, it answers my question that you can mess with the vehicle speed signal to change how the speed sensitive volume control works. I guess the Bipes device just scales up or down the vehicle speed signal going into the radio. There are devices sold to correct the speed on electronic speedometers for people who are changing the axle gear ratio or the tire/wheel size, like this $80 gadget, that would probably work for this application. I think I'm just going to disable the speed sensitive volume on my car though, since it's just one wire to remove from the radio connector (plus it saves me an $80 experiment).
