Hi,
After reading several posts about this subject, I'm still confused. It seems 4-Matics have a more complicated front suspension than 2WD. Apparantly the front shocks and springs are supposed to be one assembly where on 2WD models front shocks can be easily replaced.
The confusion arises when I try to find this "assembly" online. Most suppliers either don't list the E320 4-Matic wagon or they show a single shock without the spring. The closest thing I found is a shock that has some kind of mount on the bottom part.
So the question is if I need to replace the front shocks on my wagon, is it a simple procedure or a very complicated one requiring a spring compressor?
Anyone know what the part # is?
Thanks!
Thanks!!
I went on Startek (MB official parts site) and found the same exact thing as MB p/n 210 320 36 30 so it must be right. I guess it's not one assembly, which is good news!
4matic front shocks are a bitch. You will need a spring compressor, and you will have to disassemble the hub assembly to get the shock over the halfshaft.
O dang,
I was hoping to do that my self this summer, lol guess not. At what mileage is it a good idea to put new shocks on? I can't really tell if my ride is just "4matic wagon" or if the shocks are tired.

I have a 2001 4matic. Bought 4 bildsteins at mercedesshop.com. Installed at Midas for $60/each last summer @85K mi. Car feels completely different. I think its worth it!!!
I am surprised! I guess I wrongly assumed that places like Midas would not install parts they did not sell to you! Is this a local policy or have other folks found this to be common practice at other establishments?
My dh has typically done shocks on our vehicles in the past. He does not however, own a spring compressor (even our Jeep GC 4x4 didn't need one), so it sounds like this is something we should have someone else do.
I'm pleased to hear we can get the right part at the right price and pay someone who does shocks 'all day' to do it!
Both Midas and Mineke will do the work. When I had to replace the center muffler on my W124 I got several quotes exceeding $1K; I bought the part for about $200 and Mineke installed it for less than $100.
It is a cheap alternative to indies and dealers. By the way, my W124 with 205K miles still has the original front shocks and I do drive aggressively....
