i was wondering if springs/shocks are interchangable between all w210 years. i found springs/shocks from 2001 e55 and was wondering if would fit my 1997 e320.
natch, the answer to the question in your subject line is 'no.'
the answer to your final question should be yes, but you should wait until
someone who has done this responds first hand. I've read and heard of
folks doing this but since fitment is crucial, you should search for specific
application.
The answer is yes and no. Technically the spring rates are different based on different manufacturers between v8s and v6s. a v8 is heavier than a v6 and thus the spring rates according to H&R are different for them. So, the suspension from a E55 would fit well on my 97 E420. For a E320 it will fit, but not sure how the driving feeling will be.
The front end would probably sit up a little high. I've had experience with doing engine swaps in other cars and the front springs need to be matched to the weight of the front of the car for it to sit at the right height. It depends on the weight difference between the two engines. You might not notice much difference in the ride due to the height change other than in cornering. I assume the E55 springs are stiffer, but I don't know.
thanx guys for your replies. e55 springs would make the front end sit a little higher? i thought e55 springs were shorter and they would slightly lower an e320. are they that much stiffer?
Usually the springs for a car with a heavier engine will make a car with a lighter engine sit higher in the front. If the E55 springs normally make the E55 ride lower than say an E430, then the ride height with the E55 springs may make your E320 ride at something near the normal E320 ride height.
I swapped a V8 into a V6 Camaro years ago and with the V6 springs straining under the additional weight the handling went to hell, and the crossmember under the engine would occasionally scrape the ground, but it looked great. You are kind of going the other way.
I guess my answer is that I don't know. I don't know the spring rates or the spring lengths to compare. Like raymond said above, you might want to see if you can find someone who has done such a swap. If it were me, and the E55 springs were cheap enough and I had some extra garage time on my hands I would do the swap and see how it works out... I'd also hang onto the E320 springs in case things don't work out.
