You could find this problem on all M104 equipped MBs from the 1993 to 1995 MY, with some spillover into early production 1996 cars. This includes W124, W140, W202 and on rare W210 (early production 96's). Also M120 equipped W140s (M120 is essentially two M104's joined at the crank in a V) in the same model range. They stopped manufacturing the bad wiring harnesses in 1995 but there were some left that made it into early 1996 cars. A 1997 W210 (as the OP has) won't have to worry about this.

I believe they are for crankcase ventilation. Gasses would be sucked up through those two holes into the air intake in order to send them through the throttle body and into the cylinder again in order to combust them.

Doesn't the inline 6 use 12 plugs or have I been hearing wrong?

Hey, south. Please click the user cp link and update your profile with vehicle and location info as that is quite useful.

The L6 is one plug per cylinder, the V6 is 2, so yes, you've heard correctly (even in the deep south they get some things right, ha ha), 6 for the L6 and 12 for the V6. There is a separate DIY for the V engines.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

That means that I have been hearing wrong. You said the V6 is 12 plugs, right? I have been hearing that the inline 6 uses 12?!?!?!?!?

Sorry, guess I misread your meaning. As I and ohlord noted, 6 for the L6, 12 for the V6.
