Angry check engine electronics, very rough idle at start, shaky, scared to drive

I have no clue wheres the problem is, I have a 98e320 wagon .tomorrow my mechanic is going to change water pump which has been very shaky lately and maybe a fuel filter also, he mentioned some sensors might be faulty, but he doesn't have a computer, is there a way to check the codes from the car? has anybody experienced same problem?

pick up the 94169 obd2 code scanner for 39 bucks, they will match the internet price if you ask.Read the codes and post them.Do it before you tear into the pump or filter so you find out clues as to what is wrong one item at a time.
Let's see what codes read and take it from there.

I agree you should get the codes, if you don't want to buy the reader them take the car to Autozone or Advance Auto and they will read them for free (don't accept their diagnosis, get the raw codes and search or post them). If you do want to buy it then print the web page; they told me they have to have that to put in the till.

If the reason your friend is replacing the WP is a blind stab at your issue and not because there are valid symptoms of its impending failure then STOP him. First rule: if it isn't broke, don't fix it. The shotgun approach will only waste money and may create additional problems.

Post the codes and we'll in from there.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Hi guys, I dont know why you changing WP , do you have a sign of leaks or your cluster shows low coolant level, If so then your water pum might be damaged , thats what happend in my car , i have the rough idle and shaking when i put it in the R gear Along with Cat ratteling ??, water pump has nothing to do with these symptoms
may be you need a new 02 sensors

Hey, Mak. I think we're all in agreement about the water pump not being the culprit for the OP's noted symptoms, but the part I cut above from your post would indicate blown motor mounts on your car.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

ok, we changed fuel filter, it was clogged , I been driving a car 40000 miles since I bought it(163000 mi now ), who knows when it was changed before me, and I forgot about it also, car starts with no problem now, disconnected the battery and "check engine light electronics" is gone ,rough idle is gone also, maybe it was due to unusually cold weather here 37F. Only my radio is now dead?I guess after I disconnected the battery. I don't know if it needs some codes ?also I went to advanceauto ,like you guys suggested, but theirs code reader didn't fit, well at least I can drive my car now, while I order one, to check whats going on at the waterpump, I don;t think its broken, its just where the fan and belt is I have a feeling its gonna come loose soon, it needs something but haven;t figure quiet out yet, thank you all for your input
