Defroster Fan Not Working

When you turn on the Defroster the fan goes into High Speed and HI temp mode. Problem is this morning it worked the first time I used it, but not the second. Even in Auto Mode, when I select higher then the middle speed, then fan speed drops, until the highest setting, and then it turns off. I am guessing multiple fans, and the high speed it not working. I dont have the ODB reader with me, but not sure it will give me anything related to this (I don't think so).

Ideas?, and THANKS!

It could be the fan speed regulator went bad, but you would need to clarify if it still works fine on other modes or only on defrost. That would enable other members to better help you out.

Cheers.

Thanks, sorry for any confusion.

High speed does not work in any mode. In Auto Mode, once you go past midpoint the fan slows down on each step to last step, where is stops. As Defrost forces high speed only, I had to use manual and mid speed to get any air up on the windshield. Not good on the day after 6-10" of snow. Welcome to Ohio!

Hey, tt, welcome to the forum.

These cars do have some quirks from time to time and since they're largely a computer, "rebooting" sometimes helps. So long as you have your radio code and owners' manual (there are some things that need to be reset afterwards), try this. Turn off everything (AC, fan, etc.) and then remove the key from the ignition. Disconnect your battery (little access panel in front of the right-rear seat) and then step on the brake pedal for 30 seconds. Reconnect the cable and start the car, and do the reset procedures, including the radio code. When you've gone through all that and everything else is "normal" again, then see if the defroster works. If not all it has cost you is 10 minutes of time (if that), if so, you're golden.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Just a thought.

Does the high speed defrost work after the veh. has fully warmed up ?

The reason I ask is that I have a newer Subaru Outback that also has an automatic climate control. When the outside temps are colder and on cold start up the high speed defrost fan does not come on right away on high speed. I checked my manuel and it says that it only comes on full when the engine temp has reached a certain temp before warm air starts , as it says that there is no point in blowing cold air at high speed on a cold start up into the cabin. Once engine warms up , the fan speed increases and I have full power with heat.
Maybe this is also with your system, Who knows.

Did the reset last night and it worked. Should I be concerned that it might be going bad, or worse, a computer issue??

Thanks for the help, made the drive into work very nice today!!!

I'm glad that took care of it. Unless it recurs regularly, I wouldn't be concerned with it. Just a glitch that the "reboot" cleared. Just drive and enjoy for now.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg
