My 97 E420 idle's high in park position all of a sudden, currently I'm chasing a problem with error code P0455, I followed the DIY cleaning of purge valve but soon after the car started idling high and up & down. When the car is in drive its running smooth I'm ordering a new purge valve as we speak do you think this will correct this problem.
I think that code can also indicate a gas cap seal (try flipping the gasket) as well as the evap canister.
Have you done the "master reset" of everything? Sometimes that will cure some quirks. I'd try that before throwing any more parts or money at it.

I would follow gregs210 advice, try the reset and then go from there, then re-check for codes, the gasket and the purge valve should not set you back though. Good preventative maintenance anyway
