The regulator motors for the air flaps are known to wear out, made of plastic the gears after years of use tend to strip, hence making the "fun"

ticking noise which could possibly drive you nuts. The noise is caused by the gear trying to engage but cannot since a tooth or more is missing. There have been some previous posts about this issue and the parts may be available to fix just the plastic pieces and not the entire motor itself. Hopefully the guilty motor or element is somewhat accessable, I had some elements that required pulling the dash for repair.
The other issues are the bellows or diaphrams (vacuum elements) which can go sour too, (leaking rubber diaphram) those usually make a trolley noise, kinda like if you had a model H.O. train set underneath your dash. B
