ticking sound....

hi Everyone,
while driving in right hand drive E230
there is a clicking/ticking type noise
that comes from the passenger/left side near their foot
it has a sound like a solenoid or regulator?
which annoys the crap outa me

it is intermitant but when it starts
it stays usually for quite a while...
any ideas or thoughts are much appreciated.
thanks

Sure sounds like a regulator motor...

The regulator motors for the air flaps are known to wear out, made of plastic the gears after years of use tend to strip, hence making the "fun" ticking noise which could possibly drive you nuts. The noise is caused by the gear trying to engage but cannot since a tooth or more is missing. There have been some previous posts about this issue and the parts may be available to fix just the plastic pieces and not the entire motor itself. Hopefully the guilty motor or element is somewhat accessable, I had some elements that required pulling the dash for repair.
The other issues are the bellows or diaphrams (vacuum elements) which can go sour too, (leaking rubber diaphram) those usually make a trolley noise, kinda like if you had a model H.O. train set underneath your dash. B

P.s. I believe above link has your vac diagram for your perusal.

It may be...

the "duovalve". They can also make that noise. Open the engine compartment and take a listen next time it happens.

Good luck,

JR
