Central Locking pump faulty - worth replacing or new locking motors?

Hi All,
A friend of mine has a '99 E240 which the central locking pump has totally failed.
The dealer is quoting about $4000 to repair.
I would probably recommend him trying to get a used one from a wrecker's yard; is this a good idea or not?

Also, if he can't get one at the right price, I suggested that he rip out the genuine mercedes central locking and install new low cost after-market electric central locking motors.
Has anyone done this?

Thanks in advance.
