Replace Underbody Panel?

So I'm ripping down a country two lane in my '99 e430 this week, just breaking triple digits, when a loud thumping occurs suddenly. Sounded like a belt break, tire tread disintegration, or major air intake breach. Female passengers were not impressed...

Luckily it turned out to be the plastic under body piece that covers the oil pan, for aerodynamic reasons I imagine (as pictured on oil change DIY).

The forward 2 connection spots had ripped out, turning the piece into kind of a makeshift plow slapping against the pavement as the 100+ mph wind hammered it.

Sooo, I took the piece off. It is not salvageable. Should I replace it? If so, does anyone have a rec. as to where to find it at salvage prices? I imagine a custom shaped piece of plastic like this might be a bit pricey new Thanks

probably should replace it. if you crawl under the car and see what it covers and protects, you will understand. that seemingly silly piece of plastic is like a ice hockey face shield. if you happen to roll over a 2X4 or other debris, that plastic piece will act to deflect the object, protecting belts, fans and other tender bits. easy piece to pick up at junk yard. easy to put in too!

No worries if you run over a object...unlike the plastic panel that will not take the hit

I Bought it from Steve @ MBENZNL.com S_Krabbenborh@hotmail.com

that's a really good quote. when i replace mine a few years back i remember paying like $120 or even more. i did buy it at the dealer. if i remember it correctly the guy at the parts department told me that the panel's purpose is not only protection, but mainly to trap the air while driving and cooling the engine

You are talking about the cover under the front engine and that's the expensive one.

COVER ASSY, ENGINE UNDER FRONT - 210 520 07 22 - $90.00 +
