Funny 'wheezing' engine noise - 300 TD
I have recently bought 100k miles 300TD & notice that when under acceleration there is a (odd description follows: ) sort of whirring/wheezing/hissing noise, a bit like a clockwork toy with an air leak, 'apparently' originating from the handbrake release.
What a useless waffle.
Anyway, there is an noise under load, which might be leaking into the dirvers area though a missing rubber seal, or something?
Anyone any idea - I've never been in another of these cars, so don't know what to expect.

Good thought, but I think that it is throttle vacuum related, as when the car speed increases and the throttle is backed off, the noise disappears totally (sorry, forgot to mention that - ONLY present when accelerating) Also, it can be at lower speeds, maybe before the turbo has spun-up?
If it were the turbo, what would be making the noise & is this a 'fault' to be fixed?
Why would the noise be significant in the cabin?
I once owned a 300TD. I recall that there is a small air intake hose located near the area you are talking about. It is for "clean" cabin air and related to the vacuum system and one of the engine/fuel mixture control solenoids.
It's been quite some time since I sold the car so the details are a bit fuzzy.
I do remember being a bit concerned over this small hose just dangling there. (You need to remove the panel below the steering column to see it). There might have been a small inline filter attached to it.
I posted a question way back then on one of the MB forums and learned what it was for.
I hope this helps.
Maybe someone else is more familiar with this item.
