The hot temp reading was perfect i was assuming the cold temp would measure accurate.
Well, you know what they say about assuming... That is why they have a specific temp for checking the level. What thermometer setup did you use to check the 80 celcius mark? As long as you weren't just guessing so you know it was at 80 and the measure was correct I wouldn't be too concerned about it.
Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

yes i was using the (80C) mark. I will give it a try again. Im not too worried i already put 500 miles since the change, but will definitely check again as soon as i get more red clips.

That's not exactly what I meant, but rather how did you determine that the ATF was at 80c when you checked it?
I have a 2002 E320 with 20K miles, I seldom drive this car. When I start the car over the last weekend and put the transmission in drive, I have heard a lounder than usual clunking noise from the transmission. When I drive the car, the transmission would not shift. When I stop the engine and restart it, the transmission works normal again (it shifts OK). The transmission don't shift issue comes and goes for several times. The transmission always go back to normal mode each time after the engine restart. The last time when I start up the engine, the "Check Engine" warning light comes on. Restarting the engine can not put the transmission back to normal shifting again. It seems like the transmission is getting worse. I check the owner's manual and the manual recommend to take it to the dealer and ask the dealer to check the transmission fuild level. The transmission box is sealed and do not have a conventional dip stick. Is there a way for me to check the transmission fuild level myself without taking it in to the dealer?
and yes.
follow along till you get to the measure fluid level.Have fluid on hand(mb type only)and the special dip stick(not to be left in just for measuring)and the cap. MercedesShopWiki: 722.6 Transmission Fluid and Filter Change
However if it keeps going into limp mode, and is throwing a code or codes and making noises you need to tow it to a indie shop or the dealer and get it checked. With that few miles the trans should not be low on anything
So you need to get it checked before it checks out on you
got the code reader from harborfreighttools?94169 post the codes if in the p0700 range we might be at least able to point you towards a solution.
There's probably a DIY somewhere that would have told me, had I found it...
Changed the transmission oil in the '96 E300D today. The old stuff looked OK, probably wasn't very old but I had no info on that from the PO. The gasket was clean and flexible so I re-used it and the filter (and also because Autohaus AZ sent the wrong kit) .
After draining the pan and the torque converter, I had about 6 quarts of old fluid. Therefore, I can pour in 6 quarts of fresh Mobil-1, right? Well, yes, but not all at once.
I now have a clean floor in my garage, compliments of $3.45 (plus tax) of Mobil-1 transmission fluid. In the future, I'll pour in no more than four quarts and then idle the engine for a bit, slowly shifting through all the gears, allowing the torque converter to refill. Then I'll add another quart and drive the car to warm up the fluid so I can make an accurate measurement.

Both of you are correct. The 722.4 takes Dexron 2 or 3, and Mobile 1 ATF claims to meet these. I have heard that you can run the MB fluid in the 722.4, but it's quite expensive.
