NEED HELP URGENTLY WITH SHIFTER STUCK ON PARK, THANKS

Have a 2001 E320 with shifter stuck on park and "check engine light on. was able to manually unlock shifter but will no longer shift above 2nd gear when driving all the while " check engine" stays on.

Please help as I really don't want to spend too much to get this sorted out. could it be the brake switch as I have read a few times on this board. Anyone else with this problem and what was the end result? Please kindly advise, Thank u all in advance

Desperately seeking advice.

First

park it.
Do not drive it in limp mode.
do not drive it at all.
Have someone drive you to harbor freight tools in the closest town to you.

Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices
Call first to check stock.See if they will honor the internet price of $39.99 sometimes if you ask the manager, they do.
buy the 94169 cen-tech obd2 code scanner.
Plug it in under the driver dash and read the codes.
Post them here and let's see what the problem may be.
Do not go to a shop yet ,you may be able to fix it yourself.
If not at least you will know what is most likely wrong and have an Idea of what a shop will charge.
Knowledge is power.

i'm not aware of any liquid spilling into the gearbox but it could've happened. I'm just hoping it's not a transmission problem as the gear indicator on the dash is blank now and the car wouldn't go beyond 1st or 2nd gear. it's a sports package and i've had it since new ( over 6 yrs now) and it's always been an absolute joy to drive (did change the cat converter for 6 bills couple years ago but that's bout all the problems until this mishap)

again, hoping it's not transmission as i don't want to get hit financially

I think spilling liquid into the gear shift gate was a bigger problem in some cars older than your 2001, but that has caused some people to spend a lot of money. Try a search for related terms and maybe you will find a thread that addresses your symptoms. Agreeing with ohlord here; don't drive it until you get your error codes read, then post them here so the several gurus can interpret them for you.

One thing you might want to try is this:

When you look at the letters on the shifter assembly, and you move towards the back of the car, you reach the -D+ at the bottom. There should be a little flap directly in back of that. Get some CRC electronics cleaner, and using the little red straw, do the following:

Coming from the back of the car, insert the red straw at a flat angle (about 10 degrees) into the flap opening. Shoot a couple quick blasts in there, slightly moving the straw right to left, and front to back a few times. Give it about 30 minutes to dry and see what happens.

If any liquid got in there, this may fix the problem for you.

If not, I can't help you any further.

Cool Very Comon problem, Usually liquid spill on shifter

I have done TWO of these!

I now buy used shifters from Potomac German Auto for less than 200 $US, and do it myself.
Takes about an hour and is not that difficult.

As for Indies,,, in the OC there is a really good guy who is honest and fast!
5 star auto
925 16th st, Newport Beach 949.548.6152

Do not drive it, this condition will take out a torque converter in no time.

Best of luck

Wink Also

Sorry about the after thought.

Pull the black trim and wood trim around the shifter,
Then Pry up on the PRND it will pop right up,
There you will see half of the circut board that usually gets the wetest,
Also, a wire strap on the forward end of this board goes to the other half of the board,
This is where the 'chip' is that controls shifting,

Try the blow-dryer trick and LET US ALL KNOW if it works!
