Angry removed resonator yesterday, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON today, what to do?

i got my resonator removed yesterday and it was all well. i was pretty excited, i was hoping once the resonator was taken out, the georgous sounds would be unleashed, i was pretty much wrong, it did sound more throaty. but the initial starting sound wasn't all that amazing. i am not sure if i like it or not yet. i might need some time to get use to it i guess. its sounds better as it warms up though. anyways my problem is now i dont know why the check engine light came on. all was well on my 2 hour drive home, and today driving to work the light just turn on in the cluster. i did have the drivers side cat. replace a couples weeks ago at the benz dealer just to let you guys know what had been done to the car. i am just thinking about putting the stock muffler back on once i get tired of this, there goes my $500 dollars.

is it because of the decrease in back pressure in the muffler that causing the code? normally with the resonator the car is alot smoother and quieter much quieter, and when you start the car and walk back to the muffler you need to wait a few seconds before you see smoke come out of the muffler, now the fumes just comes right out when you start the car. this really sucks. i regret getting an aftermarket muffler remus exactly or any aftermarket muffler, now can i have my $500 cash back. well $600 probably another $100 to put the stock back on. now i really need this check engine light off.

Hey, mbnz.

I've not heard of removing the resonator triggering a CEL, lots of folks have done that. It may just be coincidence. It's also possible that something was damaged in the exhaust work, or that you had an O2 sensor close to it's limit that has now reached it.

In any event there is no code for a resonator and speculating about it won't do you any good. If you don't have a code reader head over to AutoZone and have them read the codes, write them all down and either google them, search here or post them, you'll get squared away. I wouldn't recommend you simply go running off to reinstall exhaust system parts, etc., you'll probably just end up spending money needlessly.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

thanks greg, i am just gonna go over to autozone when i get off work and have them check out the codes for me. its too much of a coincidence the cel light coming on after some exhaust work done. the muffler guys just cut off right after the resonator, i dont see how that effects cel too. i hope its an easy fix.

Yeah, just a resonator delete wouldn't trigger a CEL. I don't know about Remus but if you would have just removed the resonator and replaced it with an x-pipe, it would have sounded great, well at least my 55 did. I love the sound it has with the resonator removed, x-pipe in its place and stock muffler...

Hey, JDG, I have yet to hear any V6 sound good with exhaust "improvements". There's nothing like a V8, whether it be a touch of rumble or really throaty. Remember somewhere in the early 80s when Chevy first came out with that little V6 they put in the base Camaro? Every goober teenager ripped out the stock muffler and stuck a thrush or "turbo" muffler in there, and they all sounded awful. (I'm getting shivers just remembering it...) But still they sounded better than the fart cans today's kids are putting on ricers.

That said, I have yet to hear a V6 benz with a modified exhaust, so I may reserve judgment, but still I wouldn't want to take the chance. Besides, that's why I bought a benz, I like the nice, quiet ride...

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

amazing as it is everything is working 100% now. i dont know what triggered the cel. i just disconnected the battery for like 1 min cause my smartkey was toasted, now i only have one working key, and thats not good. the bas light came on and went off most likely thats because i disconnected the battery. i am happy everything is back to normal, and i didnt have to spend anything yet, i need another remote key, sadly those are kinda costly. but this was the best i could ever hope for .

my brother was driving my car for the first time with the muffler, i was following behind him in his s320. guess what we both got pull over. luckly we only got a warning for going a little too fast in a school zone. on the highway it sounded like a much more powerful car. i should get a video of what it sounds like, its pretty sweet. i guess it takes time to fall in love with the new tones.

from the sounds it makes, its hard to tell its a v6 and not a v8. its sounds mad when you push it. and quiets down when you want to drive like an old lady. i have been driving my car harder with the custom exhaust i dont know why.

On the other hand you'll get one of those new highly chromed keys, those look great!

That said, this info coupled with your other post today is another reason I always carry that non-electronic key with the metal door key insert in it. No matter what happens to the big electronic FOB key, I can always get in the car and have a key that (barring a serious problem with the car) can start the thing.

In theory anyway.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

i wish mine had come with one of those valet keys but it didnt. all i have is the two remote keys and one is broken now. the new chrome keys are pretty cool, thats the ones i got on the 2007 c280 loaner when my car had the cats. done. i wonder would it be much cheaper to get one of those valet parking keys without the remote.
