Came out to a dead battery Sunday morning. No big deal. Yank the old, step into the Zone,....Autozone. $79 later I'm back in business. BUT. Any disruption in electrical power throws the stereo into lock down mode and it can only be unlocked by entering the code, which I - of course - do not have. I contacted the previous owner and he doesn't either. So now I'm in a bind. Anyone have any clues? Is this one where I have no choice but to throw myself upon the mercy of the stealership and beg???

If you've ever had service done at a dealer, your receipt will have the radio code on it. Otherwise the dealer should give it to you with proof of ownership and your VIN.
Have you looked carefully through your owner's manual and related documents? I had a separate vinyl folder that was for the tele-aid and audio, in it was a preprinted label with the code.
Other than that, head to the dealer with your car and VIN (or take the registration and your VIN in) and they'll get it to you.
Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

As other posters in the thread have noted, the first thing you should do is check your service records to see if the car has ever been serviced at a dealer. If it has, the radio code will be noted on the invoice. If you haven't, all you have to do is go to a dealer and bring the ownership/registration with you. They just want proof that you own the car so they can be sure the radio isn't stolen. They won't give you any hassle about giving you the radio code. When I needed it for my wife's wagon last month the parts guy gave it to me while I was buying an air filter.
Better take the car to the dealer. I just had the same incident and the code given with VIN number was incorrect. I called the seller and in his 4 years of ownership he never did anything to radio. The car is 9 years old, so either the radio was replaced with OEM in first few years, or the MB USA has incorrect records.
Finally SA pulled the radio out and took the serial number to get correct code.
I wrote the code on the tiltle. Don't keep it in the car.
