Took my E320 in for its last check up before the warranty expired. Techs found the car needed lower control arms in the front!! Car only has 56000 miles. I found this to be unusual. However, it was under warranty and the fixed it after they ordered the parts. Gave me a R350 with 18000 miles as a loaner!!
Still, I'm wondering if I should purchase a warranty with AAA or my insurance company. The service guy told me the arms would have cost me 1700.00 for out of warranty service. My dash display was 1200.00 just for the part. thats almost 3000.00 inside of a year, minus regular maintenance not covered. If anything else breaks, it could pay for itself. or not.
did you run over something?you can get bushings for less then 40 bucks, you can get the whole arm for a little over 100.What failed?Dash cluster is repairable if it goes bad or you can pop it out easy and get one from a wrecker. In most cases regular maintenance will prevent problems and the ones that do crop up can be taken care of for less then the premium.
In your case the dealer was not ripping you off ,it was ripping the mercedes factory off!Old scam, they don't pay for the warranty work and they can say at 56000 miles something was wrong with your car,you did not get charged they charged it to mercedes. They may have even charged the parent company the full 1700 and only cleaned it up and installed new bushings and kept the extra skim.
Learn to diy your own oil changes, regular maint. or find a good indie,it will be far less then the insurance policy.

MB warranties
I think the CPO warranties will likely pay for themselves and that is why I bought my 2001 E320 as a MB certified pre-owned car. The various aftermarket companies are all over the map regarding their exclusions and coverages. If you search around on here (Benzworld, not only the W210 forum) you will find a lot to digest. I think ohlord's advice is good but I am not a DIY and am too old a dog to learn new tricks!

As far as I know, the dashboard cluster is covered under both the factory new car and cpo warranties. If they are not, they seem to occur frequently enough that they ought to be.

These cars are different to work on than traditional american cars. however, with the help of this forum YOU, yes you,, can pull your own cluster and replace it in just a few minutes. And people like Potomac ( maybe the best parts place ) will ship you one overnight for a couple of hundred US.
You have the perfect car to learn MB DIY on.
This is an opportunity for you to learn how cars should be built.

yep, the cluster is covered under warranty, both new and CPO.
No, I didn't run over anything. I'm sure they replaced them.
I'm really not too much of a DIYer. replace a hose? Sure.
Change a tire or my oil? Why not.
Service my transmission? No. Electrical work? No. Steering or suspension replacement or mods? No Way.
I know my limits.

Hey, farghenbenzer (every time I type your handle I have to double check it!)
When I bought my car I purchased an aftermarket warranty, mostly just to cover the unlikely odds of one of those nasty big-ticket items while I was making payments on it. The warranty has expired, but now that I've owned the car for a few years I feel much better about the odds, and I don't have payments any more.
Just a thought, but you might spend some time looking through the DIY sticky in this forum, some of the most common things we see are well-covered there, and it sounds like you have the chops to handle most if not all of them.
Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg
