Hello, I'm starting to want better handling from my 2002 E320 4matic wagon. The stock 16" 11 spoke rims and Michelin Energy Saver tires may be to blame. Turning corners or using on/off ramps feels like I'm being pulled to the side as if I were driving a tall box truck.
Are rims/tires the solution to this handling? The only rims I would consider are AMG Aero II Monoblocks because I want their tame look. What is the widest I can go on the front and back without any rub (using stock shocks and no lowering)?
TireRack won't show me a price and width selection for these because they apparently don't fit my car. Do they fit the W210 4matic wagon without any adapters and things? I don't want to screw up my spedometer, axles, and tire wear by running incorrect rims. Is there something better for the W210 which has that subtle look, maybe in 17" (18" seems like Honda style).
Thanks.

don't stagger on a wagon,235/45/17 all around will give you the wide tire look and retain all your spedo accuracy.Down to .4 revs per mile, rim style is up to you.ET 35.Don't know where you live but discount tire has some nice look a likes.I would strongly urge you to have a shop use their offset tool to measure the proper offset before you buy any rims esp from an online supplier. At 500 each for those amg 5 spoke 203's it would be a pricey mistake if they did not look or fit correctly
it will stiffen up your ride, less body roll.pads will lower it if you want to really hug it down.
17" Mercedes Benz AMG monoblock Wheels & Michelin Tires - $1200 orange county craigslist real amg wheels, tires are to short at 40 profile your ride would be to stiff
18" monoblock wheels and tires $450 ventura craigslist
I used to own 99 4-Matic wagon and general impression always was, that it stick to the road like Velcro. Maybe it is not the wheels you have problem with?
I always put couple psi more in the tires, than recommended.
Hey, ff. You do have to maintain size consistency with the 4matic. That said, you can find lots of used 210 and 211 wheels in 17 and 18 inch, the latter more often from the 211. Any of these will fit fine, although you'll need special lug bolts for 211 wheels on the 210 chassis.
Since you seem focused on AMG, there are lots of different AMG wheels out there; the key is to make sure the offset is right around 35.
Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Thanks for the tips, guys. It seems like the AMG 5-spoke 170 will be a simple replacement, but those belong on a CLK. I'm focused on the Monoblocks because they have the classy appropriate look for the W210. I can't get TireRack to give me the technical data for the AMG Monoblocks. Is there a trick?
The owners manual tells me the offset is 41mm, but you've mentioned "35". I guess that's mm. How much will a 6mm difference effect the car?
Lastly, I have 215/55/16 on there now. It seems like a small step up to 235/45/17. Is that 7" width (215??) to 7.5" width (235)? Will that really help keep me from getting pulled out on the corners? Thanks for your input!!
Katjek: I do think there's a problem with my rear shocks. They seem too stiff going over bumps. Maybe that's also hurting this, but I don't know.
will look large compared to the 215,it will help.the offset needs to change because of the wider tires and rims.Go to www.mbworld.org w210 or the tire section,i think they disc the monoblocks, may be a post about that,i think they had a few left and were trying to sell them.Anyway you can post a question to one of the real people that run the company and he really knows his stuff.
ohlord, thanks for the recommendation. I never noticed that they had a TireRack forum. I'll read the FAQ before I go any further.
<edit>
Uhoh, TireRack is not stocking AMG rims anymore? No wonder they show low stock on some of them. I'd better make up my mind quick. Ergh, 18" is too big, but the 170's are for CLKs...
loubapache, thanks, I'll check into this too.
It's probably something stupid, like that the dealership didn't rotate my tires at the last A service. They've been in the same positions since I bought the car 13k miles ago. But the dealer said 4matic doesn't get rotated. Guess I better do my homework.
