theres a thread for cheap oil, i need cheap filters also, paper is fine for me, i will probably be changing my oil at 5000mile intervals. is ebay the cheapest way to go? $7.25 each shipped. have to buy 4.
If cost is the only issue I can't imagine you'll find a cheaper deal than that if you only want four. If you can order a few other things and get to the $50 free shipping point, Autohaus sells them for $6 each (gen-yoooo-ine Bosch no less).
A couple of things of note, however. Your S is fine with paper and dino oil but the E was designed for synthetic (with the MB base pack, spec 229.3) and the fleece filter. If you're running synthetic then you use the fleece filter and don't change it early, there is evidence that actually increases engine wear. So if you're really going to drop the paper element in the E then you might just want to run dino and change it early and often.
Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

The V6 320 engines hit the US market around 1997 and for years had recommended dino oil to run with FSS. It wasn't till class action around 2001 when MB changed the requirement to synthetics.
And to the class action deal, the spec changed because of the oil,old school dino oil ran at fss intervals was creating sludge, clogging up the filters and oil screens and causing catastrophic engine failures. So why chance it?fleece filters 229.3 or better mb spec oil,10000 mile intervals,no worries, mate.

and to address the wix filters from napa the number they have is for paper element, not for fleece which is a must for fss and synthetic maint intervals.
autohausaz.com get a few and some air filters and such while you are at it.over $50 freebie shipping.
Can't understand for the life of me why anyone would go cheap and run dino oil and paper filters to save a few bucks and possibly take out a very fine motor in a car they really enjoy.Live and learn,I guess!!!!!!!!!

That's a tricky question. On 99 models the FSS system didn't have calendar feature, so I was driving average 13,000 between oil changes in 18 months, or even longer. On 2001 model, it counts days as well and will tell you to change the oil every 12 months regardless the mileage.
I own several toys like boat, trail bike, tractor, forklift that run just few hours every year. The average age of oil in them is 5 years.
