"Neglected" is an advertising word created by those selling a product, in this case oil.

Any real engineer will tell you power steering fluid is not particularly abused in its application.

Did you change the filter?

Ikchris and all,

I assume that you are saying that there is a filter somewhere for the power steering unit.

Tell me about. Where is it to be found? Is it a metal screen, just to be cleaned or is it an element to be replaced?

If there is one there, I will certaintly address it along with changing out the power streering fluid.

I have a 1998 e-320 with 100,000 miles . This is the last of the fluids that I must service. I did all the other fluid changes (brakes, rear diff. trans, oil (on regular interval).

Thanks
