Just today I noticed a funny tapping noise in the engine in my '02 E320 4matic.
I think it just started today. I accidentally stepped on the accelerator while parked and revved up to almost 6000 rpm for a second or two. half hour later I noticed a tapping noise in the motor. It doesn't happen all the time. It stops and starts on its own.
What could it be? I'm hoping it's not a valve. (probably is)
I doubt it's a valve, once they start making noise they generally continue to do so, not coming and going.
Could be a lifter, injectors also sometimes will make noise. Without actually being able to listen to it it's nearly impossible to guess. If you're concerned with it, take it in and get a pro to listen to it.
Good luck and enjoy the ride,
Greg

It was a fuel evaporator valve or "mott "valve as they call it. Mercedes fixed it under warranty.
Also, there was some dead pixels in the display where the clock is. Mercedes replaced the entire instrument cluster. Under warranty!!wooohooo!!!!
They also fixed that funny sqeak in the steering wheel. All under warranty.
I figure my bill would have been $1200.00 easy, considering the instrument cluster alone is $1000.00 retail.
