Clicking Noise From Rear

2002 E320, 88,000 miles
I returned from a two week vacation where my car sat in the driveway.
When driving, I hear a clicking/scraping noise from the rear that increases and decreases with car speed. The noise continues while moving in neutral, gets louder while turning left and gets much quieter while turning right.
There also seems to be a mild "shuddering" from the brakes when stopping.
This all started suddenly on my return.
Wheels and tires check out OK.
Any idea what the likely culprit is?
Any problem driving 300 miles at highway speed before repair?

Don't drive too far with it like that.

Sounds like your parking brake may be stuck or one of your rear calipers.

Also make sure all your lug nuts are tight. I had a similar sound from the rear and it turned out I only had 2 lugs left on the wheel.

Thanks for the reply.
Lug nuts are properly torqued.
I decided to take my wife's Odyssey, and I'll work on it this weekend.

Hey, ER.

Good luck with the car, I think illest is on the right track re: parking brake. Quick test: does the noise change if you're coasting down in neutral and apply just the parking brake? If so that makes it more likely, if not it could be a sticking caliper. Do you regularly flush your brake fluid per MB recommendations? Usually that will prevent a sticking caliper.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg
