i did not do this myself but still only paid a few hundred dollars to have two universal cats replaced (the second set, further down, with no O2 sensors attached). I used a reputable, local muffler shop chain for the work and it was literally thousands less than the dealer, because the dealer will use OEM parts which are insanely expensive. just saying that if you want to save some $$ think about buying the universals and having someone else do the work for you.

Same as original by Federal mandate, 8 Years/80,000 miles. Don't however know if that applies to universal cats that are welded in.

The way I read the warranty that came with the replacement cats, is that the clock start ticking again for another 8 years/80,000 miles from the date/mileage of installation of the replacement cats.

Ah, I read that wrong. When I replaced my OEM cats with universals, my car was over 80K miles, that's what I was saying. Re: the universal cats, they do not come with an 8 year/80K mile warranty. If they're not OEM I don't think they are covered by the OEM fed mandate. I'm pretty sure mine said 50K warranty, and I had the installer sign a warranty card to the effect that they would do the replacement work if anything happened prior to 50K miles.
ohlord- Re Arc Welding - of the exhaust cats. What precautions do you take to avoid damaging any electronics ?? I was told that all I needed to do to protect the computers was to disconnect the Negative Battery cable during welding.
They are available for left ,right ,front, back for $ 50 or so each, oem match, new universal O2 $65 each you splice in the cats if you weld or have a muffler shop do it,you splice the connectors of the old O2 to the univ O2( bosch oem).$ 460 in parts another $100-$125 labor at the muffler shop if you can't weld. $560 ish both sides new and new O2's to boot.
As to the O2 sensors they are a 100,000 mile maint issue,so replace them if the cat failed, your down there anyway and if your near 100,000 i.e. 85,000 up your getting close.

"GOT CODES?"
I have a 2002 E320 4Matic and I'm thinking of replacing all four cats with aftermarket oem matched universals. Ohlord (or anybody else) can you please send/tell me the exact cats I need (for each side both front and rear). I don't want to buy the assembly. I have a good shop to weld the cats in at a great price out here in Philly PA. Please be very specific as to the web site and the parts (part numbers as well) to get. I can't afford to make a mistake plus don't want CEL. Plus if there are any other things I need to do please include them as well. I want this to be a one time surgical strike. I'll post photos of the deal. Currently I'm being quoted $2500 + tax by the Stealers and I just don't have that kind of dough in this recession. So please anyone out there in WB (Ohlord i'm counting on you but others can help as well). I love the ride and can't afford me sounding like "Sanford & Sons" when I roll up to the joint!
1999 E300TD "Front Exhaust" ----> What looks like and makes a rattle like a failed catalytic converter. I have this bad rattle coming from that part on my car and am having such a difficult time locating any information on that part of the car. Has anyone else had any experience? Thanks!
