If you're in California, just make sure that the universal cats are 50 states legal. I could not find any that was, so I had to go with the full set.

Smile cats

EASTERN CATALYTIC CONVERTER, UNIVERSAL -- Universal Catalytic Converter, Meets Or Exceeds OEM Specifications For Fit And Performance $51-53 or so each
carb. oem . Do they do a visual in ca. up on a lift to check every part for carb. numbers?up here in wa state they just plug the obd in install the sniffer and run her up till the specs are recorded,. pass or fail.If the cat does the job and the numbers are in range, why would it matter who made it.several manufacturers make the whole units and the cat in those unit is the same unit so why would it not be good in every state?

In CA smog station nobody cares how the pipe looks, as long as the fumes are clean enough. I've seen the technician sticking the probe in corroded tail pipe and when sensor reported air leak, he found a whole directly in the muffler and stick the probe there.
All my gasoline MB pass the smog with 1-3% of allowed pollution. I think even with catalics deleted, they would still pass. Not that I would like to try.
Drive diesels now anyway.

concur

That's what I have found also! the cars obd2 are so finely calibrated as to trip a light and code at the slightest thing. Then you can't take the test with the codes on,then you take a car with no codes and test it and the numbers are so low compared to the maximum allowed it seems like no one would fail anymore unless they were deemed i/m not ready or a cel was on or the thing was spewing oil out it's guts.

Any how just added the univ. cats info for reference in the future,if someone is in a jam and finds this post in a search, and are on a tight budget, might be the way to go,works,it's cheap, and passes emissions .

It would be great if this thread could be added to the DIY sticky, photos are very well taken, instructions are very clear.

I agree, it's been done. Nice job, Kobus, and thanks for the addition.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

man i wish i had the lifts to try this out. seems like it's not TOO bad...does anyone have a diagram, at least, or where all of the o2 sensors are located? it appears one is located right by the MAFS in this car, but of course, that's probably the one that fails the LEAST often right?

Pre cat

sensors are down the front of the engine on the exh manifold look down and back from the radiator and follow the wires to them.Post cats are after the cat and follow the wires to them also.Always check o2 sensor operation cuz a lot of things can trip the codes for faulty mafs so it is best to test before throwing them in..Although they are 80000 mile maint items so if your car has over 80k be a good thing to do.

yeah i doubt i'd even be able to find them without pics...can't really get my car fully lifted, only halfway on ramps and even w/ the back wheels chocked i'd be nervous fooling around under there.

how do you "checK" o2 sensor operation?
