Oil Service Indicator - How to Turn Off When Service Manual Doesn't Work?
We just did an oil change on a 1997 E320 (10K, synthetic oil). When we went to reset the service indicator light, we can't get it to shut off. We tried the steps in the manual, we also checked ALLDATA, and their recommendations did not work. In addition, we cannot ge the "service wrench" to appear on the screen.
Anyone else out there have this problem, and did you find a solution?
1) Key on (position 2, all idiot lights come on, engine NOT running), within 4 seconds press the "0" twice (The present value is displayed)
2) Within 10 seconds turn the key back to the 0 position
3) Press and hold the "0" button while turning the key to position 2 again (The present value is displayed again), continue to hold the "0" button for 10 more seconds. You should hear a beep and the counter will go back to 15000 km.
4) Release the "0" button
p/s make sure your doors are closed. Hope this helps you.
It should read 10000 Miles as he is in the US. Don't want him to think something is wrong when it reads 10000 not 15000.
And yes, it is vital that your doors are closed and that you stand on your head and hold your breath, while praying... LOL... but really, you do need to have the doors closed.

Its funny theres a post for this, I went to the dealer yesterday for the same reason. He was extremely helpful. He had to make sure the door was closed and hold 0 then turning the key back worked like a charm.
He also kept trying to press the R button and said something to the effect that it worked too. Good luck.
Older models require starting the procedure in "sleep mode" (all lights and displays off).
That is often overlooked. On 2001 ML I reset the meter with door open and without sleep mode.
VeloFemme says, that the "service wrench" doesn't appear. Don't know if 97 had that option
