If you dont like the way your tranny shifts, what RPM's it shifts at, if gears change too early, or if gears change too late? Well, heres a way that your tranny could adjust to your style of driving.

Turn the Key to the "on" position (the position right before you start your engine)
Press and hold your gas pedal down for like 5 seconds
Turn Key to "off" position (dont remove the key) and then release the gas pedal.
than wait about 2 minutes or so.

afterwards, go drive your car the way you like to drive it and your transmission will readjust/relearn your style of driving (after like 5 minutes or so)

P.S. Thank you Raymond g- for this info.... Credits go to Raymond g-.

Is safe? could have problems?

Thank you
The relearn proceedure is perfectly safe and there are no problems, but its not an option on all models. ;)

Couple things to add:

1. Make sure door is closed and kept closed during the entire procedure.

2. Do not remove the smart-key after turning it to the "off" position.

3. You have to wait a MINIMUM of 2 minutes before starting the engine to allow for a complete reset.

I do this quite often since I am in stop and go traffic every day and my transmission's computer gets all funky.

It takes the transmission 40 shifts to learn your driving style... this happens very quickly in stop and go traffic, so yeah, it gets stupid real quick... :D

Anybody knows if this procedure will work on 1997 E430?
Perhaps someone could come up with a list of models that thsi procedure will work with
Thanks
All 1997-newer W210's use the 722.6 transmission, so it should work with all.

BTW, there's no such thing as a 1997 E430. The 1997 V8 was an E420. From 1998 and newer it was the E430.

I have been waiting for this feature since the day I got my car. The dealer told me "Oh yeah, it is constantly relearning. You want to shift like a race car? Drive that way and it'll learn." Nope, hasn't learned yet.

All I want is a little "step on the gas and it goes". It's literally dangerous when I must get out of someone's way on the highway but the car refuses to GO when I step on it. It just stays there, lounging in its low RPMs in its high gear.

I'm really tempted to try this.....

Hey, FF, I wonder if there's something else going on with your car. I'll admit that 95% of the time I drive like a little old man, but when I hit the gas on the freeway, it downshits and goes.

The dealer is right, it's adaptive and constantly relearning. Won't hurt a thing for you to reset it and let it relearn from baseline. I would suggest you get it warm first so that it's not learning/shifting when the engine is cold, which is a different curve altogether.

Last thought: how many miles on your 210 and when did you last change the fluid and filter?

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Haha sorry, my english is very bad. proves it = test it = try it

you understand already?
I do this all the time... it works perfectly... you can tell when you start driving after the reset that it shifts differently. You are not going to hurt anything by trying it. Guaranteed... I have asked my dealer about it and they said it's fine to do when I feel my tranny not doing what its supposed to do.

It is constantly relearning... scenario:

I am driving along at 40mph and need to pass someone... I floor it, utilizing the kickdown, and I am off with force. Next time I step on it even a little, say within a couple minutes, it is MUCH more responsive than normal and flys... as if it's all fired up and ready to race.

If I don't get on it anymore and just drive at 40mph again, it will recognize that I am not in need of that power anymore and adapt back to the leisurely drive mode.

It is really a wonder to experience... it's fun to show people what it does.

You could have a glitch or hangup in the computer that a reset would clear up. Or you need to have your fluid flushed.

Regardless of where it is in the learning process, putting the pedal to the floor should ALWAYS trigger an immediate downshift. If it thinks you are in "Grandpa" mode, it might not downshift for a moderate increase in throttle, but it should always kickdown under 100% throttle. If not, something is wrong with the tranny.

so..

So, How do I know if I reset my tranny comp. I did the whole prosedure, and when I was driving... as I slowed down, it would downshift in short intervals back into first. Is that what its supposed to do when its getting reset?

P.S. What other kinda cool and easy things are there about this car... For example: My A/C controls has an onboard diagnostic thing if you put the A/C on 72* on both sides and the hold the REST button for like five seconds. The Auto button scrolls through the selections... I used to know what selection was for what.

the part when stepping on the gas paddle all the way down, does it last 5 seconds or 15 seconds? when i reset mine every few months or so i usually step on the gas paddle for 15 seconds because that's what i was told by an mb mechanic. am i doing it wrong? should it last only 5 seconds?

Hey, Tirona. I'm not sure what the exact time is, if you were told 15 and it works just continue to do that, it surely won't hurt anything even if might be a little too long. (I wouldn't be surprised if the mechanic padded the time a little since people seem to be a little quick to jump...;)).

Take care and enjoy reshifting the ride,
Greg

I know this thread is over 1 year old. Thanks to ohlord again.

I recently noticed some change in the trany and it feels more responsive. I think I accidentally reset the trany for a few times. Due to work, I have to sleep in the car recently (not because of my wife as she is a christian). Every now and then I would step on the pedal for a while with my keys on and off, etc. Then recenly I think the car really respond to my driving style better. Thank you.
