Maybe it's time to replace the battery inside the remote. I found that MB remote uses battery pretty fast. Whenever, it stopped working on me, I replace the battery and it started to work.
to revive this ole thread- Is an aftermarket alarm a total "no no" on this car. I know the car is full of touchy sensors and doo hickies, but my IR sensor on my door is broken and the I have to lean over the hood to activate the one on the dash, which often takes a 20 tries before it finally opens..
p.s. I had an aftermarket alarm on a range rover before, it had a mind of its own, sort of how I imagine the mercedes to do.
I am not sure about one sensor cost, but I would imagine it would be similar to the cost of a whole viper system with remote start, 2 way communication, shock sensors and everything. Can you tell I work in the battlezone - downtown new orleans.
Do your systems work for farther than 6 feet, even when everything was new? This car never had any range to remote unlock/lock
I heard from MB owners with aftermarket alarms, that they drain the battery in just few days. We had our MB parked armed for 5 weeks and they always started without a problem. My 97 E300d has sensor in the mirror, on the trunk lid and in driver door that got damaged by somebody trying to stick the key in it. I use mostly the one on the trunk. It is hit or miss. Sometimes the remote work, sometimes I have to use the blade key. No recognizable reason for any of this. Very often I can lock the car with the remote and need key to unlock. Very often it is opposite.

The IR remotes used in the older 210's are rather limited. I'd say that ten feet is about the maximum range that I can get.
I don't have the sensor in the door or trunk lid; only on the mirror. It would almost certainly work better if there were an additional sensor outside of the car. If your car were mine, I'd price that sensor. It's not a large part, but it is cosmetic so it might be somewhat expensive.
Since it goes in the place of the door cylinder, I would expect it to come out just as easily as that cylinder. Removing the door cylinder from my car is a five-minute job.
