I have been told the wheel bearings on my 1999 e320 are adjustable, and need regular adjustment. Both front bearings went (and took the spindles with them), and I am skeptical. The rotors had bee recently replaced, could the bearings have been screwed up at that time.
On the E430 they have a locking nut which tightens to 8 nM. Not much. On most other makes and models the front bearings are tapered and over tightening can cause early failure. Fortunately I haven't had to go into the E series yet but I'm betting they haven't changed the technology.
