Hi~
My 97 E420 runs great, except for a new problem that just deleloped. While driving temp is in the proper range and does not fluctuate. When slowing down and being in traffic, temp climbs to almost the red zone. I checked the fan and it is running, antifreeze level is correct. Any ideas ? ? ?
thanks donald
Overheating is usually tied to lack of coolant, bad fan clutch, aux. cooling fans not running or a bad thermostat. When you say that the fan is running, which fan are you referring to?
if its not the fans sounds more likely like the thermostat. I make sure what ever it is to fix ASAP, do to the fact that if your car keeps overheating you can loose your water pump. Ive had this happen before in my other car.
Thanks for replying~
I believe that there is only one fan. Do you know if there are two speeds for that fan?
Shouldn't there be 2 Aux fans in front of the radiator? These are Variable Speed Electric Fans that come on low speed when using A/C and/or when temps reach about 95c. They come on high speed when temps reach 105c.
My car has never reached or passed the 100c mark yet.
I do believe the viscous fan does have 2 speeds as well.

Do you know if it easy to get to the thermostat on a 97 e420?
To be honest I am not sure where its at, but like the post above this reply states, if your missing the two aux fans in the front then that can be causing your issue. In my personaly experience, if it where anything besides the fan or thermostat then you would be having alot more issue pertaining to overheating. In my personal experience your simptoms sound much more like the thermostat based on how long its taking to overheat or get hot. In some cases the thermostat sits on the front end of the car, but MBs are different.
