I have a 1996 E 300D and 5 or 10 minutes after I start driving the engine stops dead, like I turned off the key. Then it will not start at all for 1 or 2 minutes. The ETS warning light is on, after a minute or so the ETS light goes out and the engine starts no problem. If I then keep driving it doe not happen again. But next time I start it may do it again. It probably does this 1/3rd of journeys.
Is the ETS light a symptom, rather than a cause? Does anyone know what is going on? I had Mecredes check out the engine and there was no fault found and no record of faults found in the computer.
My failing K-40 relay module caused my car to quit like this. I resoldered the connections inside of the module, but had to do the job twice to get it right. I hadn't soldered the low-current connections the first time, and they broke due to new forces being imposed after soldering all the big ones.
Given yours is a diesel, i'm not sure if the CPS is something that your car would have. do a search on crank shaft position sensor and you'll find something that might be related to your problem.
however the ETS light doesnt come on with that problem.
I had similar problems on my 240d and all it was was the fuel filter. Diesels have to have the fuel cut off in order to stop. If you ever get a vacum leak on a 240d you cant turn off the engine with the key you need to open the hood and press the STOP lever, or try and stall the engine which ruins your flex disk.
Thanks for the comments so, far, please keep them coming. I have changed the circuit board thingy (is this the CMC?) in the fuse box. That hasn't helped. It is going into the dealer on Tuesday for them to drive it for a few days so they can see the fault first hand.
Why would low battery capacity cause this? The battery will crank over the engine for minutes if I ask it to. Thanks, Elizabeth
