I have a w210 in brilliant silver metallic. Other drivers have always been scraping against my bumpers in car parks, so I have finally got round to doing a DIY respray. This I have done by using some on-line guides.
I seem to have the colour matched up as best as I can and the finish looks good, however the actual effect is a bit dull. I did the primer, colour and then 2 coats of laquer. Do I now need to polish the bumpers? The on-line guides mentioned nothing about this, but reading the forum suggests I need to. I would just be polishing the clear laquer, wouldn't I?
If polish is needed, will just ordinary polish do?
Some people can spray the clear coat so that it requires no finishing, but not all the time.
You need to start with wet sanding it. Depending on the surface, start with 400 or 800 grit. Move up to 1600. Keep the sandpaper well wet with water as you go.
Then you use rubbing and polishing compound on it. You certainly want to be only polishing the clear coat. It will look very bad if you break through.
