My transmission has failed over the past few days. I now only have first gear. Took it to the dealership today, dropped the pan, looked clean, fliud also clean. They have recommended a new transmission and quoted me a price of 9800.00$!. This is more than the car is worth, it is in good condition otherwise. I am sure I can do better with another shop. Any advice on how to proceed. If I decide to not repair the car, how can I dispose of it? How much is a reasonable price to pay for a used transmission installed?? In my short amount of research, this is a significant issue with this transmission >100000K miles. Mine has 102000, with a 100000K warrenty.......................................... ..............Needless to say I am not happy. Does anyone have any experience with Cottman Transmission?

If there were no metal shavings in the drain pan, there is a good possibility your problem could be something shy of a new (or rebuilt) transmission.
I would definitely look into having yours diagnosed (and rebuilt if necessary) by an independent shop. If possible, try to find one that has worked on some of these 722.6xx transmissions before.

Damn it cpb!
You have posted this same thread-starter on two different forums, and you have two MBs listed in your profile. Which frigging car has the bad transmission?
You own a 1997 SL500 and a 1997 E320, and both have tranny failures? Your post sounds fishy to me.

OK, my apologies then, and I hope you are able to solve your problem. Just in case you are unaware, you are allowed to delete your other (on the wrong forum) post.
That dealer should actually be thrown in jail. Retail on a new tranny is $5,200. Labor is 8 hours, or roughly $800 in a dealership world (give or take a few hundred). You should be able to get a warranteed rebuild for $3K.
10:1 you only need valve-body or control-unit work anyway. It doesn't hurt to call around to find out who an work on the 722.6.
I would vent at MBUSA: you should be a prized customer as an owner of 2 MB's, and the dealer is giving you what you would expect from a downtown used car lot.
