I got P0170 and P0173. Is this most likely a bad MAF?
Looking back, while I was waiting for my new air filters I cleaned the old filters b/c they were very dirty and put them back on the car for a few days. Bad move.. should've never re-used them.
Anyway,
1. How difficult is MAF removal in 01 E55? I tried to remove it in 97 E420 but it was quite difficult b/c I couldn't get to the bolts.
2. Should I try to clean the MAF first before buying a new one? Or, with 70k miles, just order a new one? None of the local stores have CRV MAF cleaner.
3. Are the units sold in ebay OEM, legit parts? Ebay ones are $200, autohaus sells em for $265. I don't want to save a few pennies now only to spend more in the near future.
4. Does a bad MAF affect gas mileage, and how much? Car drives fine.

i would personally clean it with crc maf sensor cleanser or something like that first. if it doesn't work, than i would buy the unit.
i don';t think putting back the old air filters caused for a few days caused the error. maybe changing the air filter too often can contribute to the maf sensor failure. i was told once by a mechanic who has worked on mercedes all his life not to change the air filter too often, because it can contribute to the malfunction of the maf. he said to change it every 60-65k miles or so, unless i live in a very dusty area, than a little more often. but who knows
tirona, i heard crc cleaner is nothing but 90% isopropyl alcohol. i have tons of isopropanol at work, i wonder if i should just dump the whole MAF into a big tub of 90% isopropanol and shake it around a bit??
this is assuming i can remove the MAF from the car. does anyone have instructions?
on a 97 E320 like mine it;s pretty easy to remove the maf sensor, because is right next to the air filter assembly. i don't know where it would be positioned on a E420, but i would think it has to be connected with the air filter, so just follow the tube between the air filter and the engine. but when you get it out, make sure you separate the little electronic piece from the maf unit, and then soak it in isopropanol. hopefully that will solve the problem.
thanks all, i said 'f##k it with cleaning' and ordered a new one. will report back once i put the new one in.
currently i have no real hesitation or rough idle issues but the car doesn't have real juice above 4500rpm and just won't accelerate like a mofo. hopefully after the install it'll do 5.0seconds 0-60. lol
On my 97 E320, is that the same thing as what my mechanic calls an air mass sensor? I have replaced it twice in the 7 years I've had the car (233,000 mi).

Yes, that is the same thing.
You've gotten a high mileage car. Any maint. tips? How many times have you change the ATF? Is the transmission original? Any oil leak?
