changed engine oil for the first time today

the FSS said i still have 4000 miles to go but since i just got the her i am doing most of Service B myself now. so today i did oil change w/ M1 0W-40. few observations:

1. the fleece oil filter needs some force to get seated into the filter cap! i thought i might break the fragile filter apart.

2. isn't the copper washer included anymore with the oil filter? I couldn't find it in the filter packet, but instead there were 5 o-rings..?? i only used 4 b/c i removed 4.

3. the oil filter housing is THE spot to refilll with new oil, it's huge and i don't need a funnel.

4. i bought the oil filter wrench locally for $3.50. 76mm 14 flute, perfect fit.

I know! That filter is on pretty snug after it's been in there a while. I think my filter came with a crush washer but I didn't use it because I used an oil extractor. The extractor sucked the oil pan dry, nothing was left, plus I extracted all the oil from the oil filter housing.

I first noticed the extra oil left over in my BMW 330Ci's filter housing when I was changing it's oil, the oil filter housing is pretty much the same design as our Mercedes.

The filter design actually makes a lot more sense because during an oil change you can instantly see if there are any loose metal flakes in your filter without having to break out a hack saw and all the possibilities of that, like cutting yourself by mistake.

I have been buying Mobil 1 at Wal-Mart but now I'm going to use Amsoil 5W-40 European Car Formula. It meets Mercedes Benz 229.31 and 229.51. My local NAPA has it for $4.95/qt which is pretty good.

This is very sweet price! You have to buy it immediately and as much as you can, until they didn't change sticker price. In my local store this oil for $8/qt

If you oil the gaskets prior to installing the filter, and use a "TWISTING" motion to install the filter, it goes on preatty easily.

Be sure the filter is COMPLETELY seated up in the filter housing.

Congrats on doing it yourself.

Oil filter kits come only with the filter and O-rings.

If you're draining the oil (so that you need a new crush washer for the drain plug) you have to buy that separately. Even at the dealer they're quite affordable, I usually just order a few when placing an order at autohaus or autopartswarehouse.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

It's not important and there is no significance.

LK is right on the money.

Detergent motor oils are designed to carry dirt and contaminants away from your vital engine parts, so darkening is normal. So long as you're using MBZ-spec oil and filter, don't worry about it, follow the normal intervals and you'll be fine.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Mine is still Mobil 1 amber after about 1400 miles. If your oil gets brown after 2000 miles next time make sure you get the old oil out of the filter housing at your next change. The same thing happened with my BMW, oil got trapped in the oil filter area. I now suck the oil out of that area with an extractor as normal practice.

It really shouldn't effect the performance of the oil but if you want some hard facts, send it to be tested:

Blackstone Laboratories

That lab is really popular on the oil forums. I'm going to send my "lifetime" ATF fluid there for testing, my car has 65k miles on it and I'm going to change the fluid, plus I'm going to do the rear end.

Did mine two weeks ago

I changed my oil and did a "B" service myself, did it with an extractor, all in all I think it will cost about $85.00 to do my own oil, the Mobil 1 being the biggest expense now that I have the extractor.

Very easy and yes the filter housing hole is the best place to fill her back up, did about 7.5 quarts through there then the rest through the filler cap.
