I learned the hard way, as well, by an AIRPORT POLICE, of all people. Pulled me over for no front plates in the G55 that I bought at Houston Greenway.
Of course, Greenway said tough luck, buy the front bracket. On the G it is $300 !!! For $300, I'm sure that will pay for several tickets (If and when I get pulled over again!)
Morale of the story, don't buy from Houston Greenway!!
Yes it looks better without it. But I got a ticket when parked at LAX airport, Los Angeles and have to pay $25 fine plus proof of new plate installed within 10 days
why you needed license plates in the front. It's not like they going to look at the front of the car when they pull you over. It's just a waste of metal and kills the look of the car. Mine came with one, so I'd rather leave it on, since there's two ugly holes from when they destroyed the bumper to mount the stupid frame.
We just got a 2001 E320 and the front license plate was in the trunk. My daughter needs the plate installed in order to take her driving test in the car. I have not gone to the dealership yet to ask how to mount it on without destroying the nice bumper. Anyone know the cleanest way to mount the front plate on?
I probably am lucky with no tickets yet. Knock on wood. There's prestige with them mercedes, three pointed star plates. I really rather have no license plates on it.

you shouldn't need to *have* to purchase a license plate holder. the car will have the appropriate mounting screws on it (mine did, at least) and you can mount it with no license plate holder. In fact, the rules in Texas were recently made much stricter such that probably the vast majority of holders technically violate the rules and can get you an expensive ticket. I would suggest directly attaching the plate to the car and going that way. If nothing else, you have cleaner lines as a result.
