car slightly sluggish offline, and rough idle when temp >70F???
car slightly sluggish offline, and rough idle when temp >70F???
very strange problem. my 97 E420 ran perfectly all winter, but recently as temps have gotten into 70s and more humid, the car idles quite rough, wants to drop below 500 and stall (wont actually stall). also, there is some initial hesitation when i punch the gas for 1-2 seconds.
what could possibly be affected by ambient air temp?
funny, it was down to about 38 degrees this morning and the car ran great.

My car has always been a little sluggish at low RPMs and before the temp gauge begins to climb. I am hardly an expert, but I don't think the higher outside temperatures and humidity has much (if anything) to do with your recent problems. Maybe, just by coincidence, it's time for some sort of tune up?
Good Luck!

I think all DIY'ers should have some sort of ODB-II scanner. I have an Actron but I don't think the brand matters. I would hook up a scanner after you decide which one you want. Make sure it can read pending codes as well as freeze frame data. Pending codes are ones that don't happen enough to set off the check engine light and freeze frame data helps you diagnose what happened when an event took place.

What have you already replaced on the car, ProV1X? Anything in the ignition (particularly the secondary) could be a potential culprit, depending on miles, etc.
If you're at or over 100K and haven't done plugs, I'd be doing those anyway.
Other things that are particularly heat-sensitive and could affect idle are the O2 sensors, remember they're part of the feedback loop and if periodically out of range could cause that.
Also, even if you don't have a CEL you may still have a trouble code stored (there is an algorithm that determines when the CEL comes on, so trouble codes store up and it may never actually illuminate). Thus, I think flw210 is on the right track, if you don't want to buy a scanner, head by an Autozone store and they'll plug in for you and download the codes. If they find some that may lead you towards an answer.
At any rate, I'd start with the codes, no reason to start replacing things shotgun-style (other than the plugs, 100K is pretty much the end of life for them anyway, and that's an outside mileage as well). You can find the plugs online for a pretty good price, unless you really want to treat it sweet all you need is stock replacements. Although, Autohausaz.com has the Bosch Yttrium electrode plugs for your car (item 7927) for $1.94 each, which is less than the stock copper Bosch plugs, $16 is pretty cool for a set of plugs. Buy the Lisle boot tool (picture below) ($18) since you're saving so much on the plugs and that will make the job easier, don't forget dielectric grease and an oil filter, now you're at $50 and shipping is free.
Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

1. camshaft sensor came up .... replaced with a new one... no change
2. scanner also told a troubling 3rd injector... got my injectors cleaned checked ... no change.
3. Changed MAF with a new one BOSCH... no change
4. changed Spark plugs... no change
5. got my coils, wires checked... no change
6. Actuator cleaned...with WD40... no change
7. fuel tank cleaner .. in the fuel tank... no change
8. Resonator, Catalyst checked and replaced for possible blockage... nochange
9. Fuel pressure valve changed... no change
10. fuel pump, filter changed... no change
11. Engine mounts, Tranny-mounts changed... no change
12. Tranny fluid complete changed (8 ltr.)
And no CODES left on the scanner....
NOW... i need to know what i left out....
1. What is the position of all the O2 sensors... i know one is b4 the cat.
2. Could it be the Throttle position sensor in the actuator? do these cars position the opening electronically of by wire?
3. Any further suggestions.....
P.S. i dont intend to hijack this thread.... i just want to share all what info i have on the exact same problem.... that might save u $$$...
