Smile rattle when accelerating

i welcome any suggestions regarding this problem.
i have a 2002 e320 with 50k miles.
there is a rattling sound that i hear while driving that appears to come from the engine compartment, when the car is warmed up and occurs during acceleration.
i took it to the dealer and for some reason could not reproduce the sound on the test drive.
the dealer thought i might need a new muffler ($1000) based on a tapping test.
i am far from an expert but would the muffler cause the noise i am describing?
i asked the dealer what if replacing the muffler did not fix this problem. he said that i would still have to keep the muffler even if it was not the problem.
i have made an appointment with a different dealer for an opinion.
any suggestions as to the source of the rattle?

I have an appointment to have mine checked on Monday. I have a rattle/clanking noise when I take off - sometimes hear it when going high speeds. I left a post in the "brakes/tires" forum and the only response I got was that it could be my anti-rattle clips on my front brakes. Like I said, I'm taking it in Monday to see if that could be the problem. Someone also said it could be that if my front wheels had the wrong lug nuts installed that the wheel can rub the parking brake cables. Mine doesn't do it all the time which is why I thought I'd share my story with you. I think if it was the muffler ie: an exhaust leak it would do it all the time -

Have you guys considered that it might be the motor mounts? If the noise is coming from the engine area, I don;t see how it couls possibly be a muffler issue.

another clue.
the rattle is gone after being there on and off for months. we are having a spell of warm weather. this is the only thing that has changed.
also i spoke to a family member who is a mb service manager out of state and he said it could be a bad belt tensioner.
will see. thanks for the input.

A matrix/palette in your catalytic converter may be broken.
Try a search catalytic converter.

rattle fixed

my rattle which would come and go for the last year or so was particularly bad last weekend and i made up my mind to take the car in to the shop.
last weekend i took of the engine cover to look around.
the rattle has been gone since then.
i think (hope) that the engine cover was not on firmly enough, and that caused the rattle. i hope it is gone for good.
