Engine Shutdown, electrical problem ???

Hi, I have a 1997 E300Diesel with 170,000 miles on it & I love it, but, I have for about a month now been having all kinds of problems with electrical stuff, the ABS & Wear pad sensor along with I think the ETS comes on the computer display, the check engine light also but then the engine light goes off after several starts, then when these are all showing the engine shuts off completly, this has been happening at both 60 miles an hour or at a red light it does not matter. Gear box has at one point been in limp mode, would not change out of low gear. I have changed the brake light switch & the Voltage regulator, brake pads have allways been good condition, it seemed to be cured when I fitted the voltage reg then I put the A/C on & it started again, cuts engine out completly. I have to stop put gearbox in park & start engine, its getting a little dangerous when at 60 mph you loose steering efficiency & brakes. When this happens I hear all kinds of clicking from center consol & gearbox, any ideas.Thanks in advance

I'm not a mechanic, but the above symptom ought to tell you where your problem is, or at least where to begin.

As far as the engine cutting out, that is probably a Mercedes safety mechanism activating when the "computer brain" sees all of those errors.
