430 4 Matic question

How heavy is your steering?

I drove an 99 E320 4matic and a 99 rwd 430, and both had extremely light steering.

My 430 4matic is quite heavy at all speeds, but especially so on the highway.

some specs
48k miles
brand new fluid (the fluid should be gold in color, yes? thats what I got from the dealer)
New Yokohama avid H4s 235/45/17 tires

The steering wheel also doesn't return to center easily by itself. It will stay cocked by about 20 degrees (in the direction of the turn) if you don't bring it back to the center.

Does this sound like a steering rack or power steering pump problem?

Thanks

Mercedes models don't have big self-returning force in general, but power assistance in steering is very good.
I would suggest checking the PS fluid and arrange wheel alignment.

I flushed the power steering last night, and filled the fluid to the max level.

I will have to look into an alignment.

If the fluid is OK, try to drive the car without PS. Take the belt off and see the difference. Do it in remote area for safety.

that would have to be a short trip, given that the serp. belt runs the water pump and alternator.

fwiw, the car definitely does have some power assist, but its not as strong as I thought it should be, given the other cars I drove.
